Continuing from yesterday's blog entry, we stay on the first reading of the first Sunday of Lent. For those of you who might not recall, it's Deuteronomy 26: 4-10. It speaks of God's covenant with the Israelites. One of the reflection questions that Father gave required us to recall the things we are thankful to God for.
In my mind I was already starting to give thanks to God for His providence, for His abiding presence in our lives, for the gift of each other, for the people He sends our way, for our families and friends, blah blah blah. The list is endless... Angie had alot of things she wanted to thank God for as well and she was bursting to share with everyone. However, we were not sure if this was to be quiet reflection or one that called for us to share. In the end, one after another, people started sharing their thoughts...
There was something someone mentioned that struck me and has been stuck in my head since. She said: "The ability to recognise the things to be thankful for is something to thank God for." Wow, imagine going through life not being aware of the things around us we should be thankful for... Indeed God has blessed us with that ability, that gift which helps us see the things that are so often taken for granted. God has given us all that we need and us being able to recognise that is so powerful and necessary for us to grow in our Christian journey.
The Israelites were complaining to Moses for bringing them out into the desert where there was no water but they failed to realise that God has brought them out of slavery and He will give them what they need. Sure enough, they would be led to springs of water to quench their parched lips. Ultimately though, it is their thirst for Christ that is really needed. If they recognised that, they would definitely be confident of survival in the arid desert.
We ourselves have experienced our own desert periods and it is through that desire for God which brings about the knowledge that God will give us what we need. It is our ability to recognise what He has given that affirms that knowledge and belief.
Thank you Lord for being our provider. Increase my faith in you.
